Here are the principal grammatical components in Spanish and a few valuable facts on them:

Adjectives:
Adjectives are used to qualify a specific noun, to state something about it. It’s crucial to think that in Spanish they’re commonly placed after the noun. As adjectives are always associated a noun, they’ve got to match with them in gender and number.

This means that whenever you would like to say something about the noun “niño”, which is masculine and singular, the adjective that you utilise will likewise have to be masculine and singular. You are able to say “niño alto” (tall boy), “niño pequeño” (small boy), etc. If, then again, if we are discussing a young woman, you’d have to say “niña alta” and “niña pequeña”.

Nouns:
Nouns are words which are for the most part used to mention a person or thing. Every nouns in Spanish has a sex, signifying that they’re either masculine or feminine. For example “la niña”, “la mano” or “el problema” and “el niño”.

Pronouns:
Pronouns replace nouns. For instance, you are able to say “la niña está aquí” (the girl is here) or “ella está aquí” (she is here). In that case “ella” is replacing for “la niña”. The subject pronouns in Spanish are “yo” (I), “tú/usted/vos” (singular you), él (he), ella (she), nosotros (we), vosotros/ustedes (plural you), ellos (they).

The singular and plural “you” are employed differently dependent on the dialect of Spanish that you’re utilizing. It’s significant to recall that subject pronouns are often dropped in Spanish, because the ending of the verb already shows this. So, native speakers will state “estoy aquí” (I’m here) instead of “yo estoy aquí”.

Verbs:
Verbs indicate actions. Normally while you recite a verb, you use what is known as the infinitive, e.g. “hablar” (to speak). In Spanish there are 3 different types of verbs, depending of how their infinitive ends. These distinct categories are known as conjugations.

Thus, there are verbs ending in –ar, such as “hablar”, in -er “comer” (to eat) and in –ir “dormir” (to sleep). As brought up earlier, verbs in Spanish have different endings dependent on who the subject of the action is. These endings will alter from one conjugation to the other. For instance, with the verb “hablar”, the singular “you” is “(tú) hablas”, whereas with “comer” it is “(tú) comes”.

Firstly, know exactly why you are learning the language in the first place. You need to have a clear picture in your mind as to why you’re learning Spanish – it might be to pass an exam for a job application or promotion, to be able to speak well enough to go on holiday to Spain in a month, or to be able to talk with your Spanish girlfriend. Most students don’t have a very clear picture in their heads as to why they are learning, which they can head towards and measure their improvement by. Just by knowing where you are heading you will learn much faster, and with greater ease. This sounds obvious, but many students do not do this.

Secondly, try and make this reason a solid goal that you can aim for. Find out what is in the exam that you need to pass, for example. So that you know exactly what aspects of Spanish grammar you will need to know to pass it. Then pay special attention
to exactly what the exam will require of you. If you want to learn Spanish so that you can get by on holiday in Spain when you go in one month, think carefully about what language you will need exactly, and don’t spend time on anything else – focus on the practical language that will be useful to you (restaurant language, emergency language, etc). If you just want to learn to a decent conversational level, make your goal to be able to talk for one whole day, or week, purely in Spanish.

Now you have a clear target to head towards, your mind will focus on the aspects of Spanish that you need to achieve it. The subconcious mind absorbs information twice as fast and readily if it has a clear reason to and a solid goal you can visualise.

Thirdly, you should create real time pressure for yourself. For example, set the exam for six months. and commit yourself to sit and take that exam in six months no matter what. Make a promise to yourself that you will avoid all English-speakers on your holiday. If your goal is to reach a conversational level– tell a Spanish-speaking friend that in one month you will spend a whole day talking to them only in Spanish. Ask them to hold you to your request.

This pressure will focus your mind wonderfully during classes. Notice how different your attitude and speed of learning is to other students with no idea of a good reason why they’re learning, no specific goal or time pressure!

Number four, make sure that you choose the best way for you to learn Spanish. Classes in schools are often not the best way to learn Spanish. the pace will always slow right down – to the pace of the slowest, or at best an average student, while the teacher’s attention is divided between many students.

Of course, the best way to learn Spanish is to go and stay for a while in a Spanish-speaking country. Step 5 – Get in at the deep end! This step is the most important of all if you are serious about learning Spanish fast, but for some reason most students don’t take it. It is to find a native Spanish Speaker who will meet with you regularly to have conversation at their normal talking speed and in their normal accent. Do this and you will improve ten times faster than most students.

Most students will never take this step. They study at a casual pace for years, and then have real trouble understanding native Spanish speakers. So don’t you be one of them!

Just knowing these five steps already ensures you will learn Spanish 3 times as fast as the next student. Enjoy your new language!
